That sounds awfully like the way that Symbols & Instances work in
Fireworks. Have you had a chance to test this yet?

If you select an object or group, and choose "Insert Symbol" from the menu,
then any copies you make of this object will automatically update to
changes you make to the original object or group. If you clone, duplicate,
or copy/paste these symbol instances, then each instance can be
individually positioned, rotated, scaled, or blended, yet they all remain
editable en masse.

Is this similar to what you're considering there...?
